Our History

A Tradition of Excellence

Since we opened our doors in 1986, we've worked hard to earn our reputation as the premier equine hospital in the Mid-Atlantic region. To best meet all of your horse's medical, diagnostic and surgical needs, we offer you a staff of over 40 dedicated professionals, including 16 veterinarians, eight of whom are board certified clinicians. More than any of our credentials is our commitment to resolve equine health issues and patiently and effectively communicate with horse owners and professionals.

We Share Your Passion
There is something to be said for knowing you are supported by a comprehensive veterinary team that includes board certified specialists in the fields of surgery, internal medicine, sports medicine and rehabilitation, reproduction, ophthalmology, dermatology and cardiology to provide patients with the highest level of diagnostics and therapeutic planning. In addition to the hospital clinicians, we also have a field service department, whose veterinarians work closely with the specialists as a team, providing quality care in the field.

We Understand Your Needs
As a part of our commitment to being a recognized leader in the field of equine veterinary care, we have expanded our medical center to house 34 horses, including a dedicated, stand-alone, climate-controlled isolation facility and two state-of-the-art surgical suites. The consistent, ethical, and compassionate healthcare provided by our team of professionals has helped us build solid, long-term relationships with both clients and referring veterinarians nationwide.

We Have the Expertise and Experience You Want
The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center has established itself as the premiere surgical and medical facility in the Mid-Atlantic region. Horses are referred to our facility from throughout the region for a variety of conditions ranging from routine elective orthopedic surgeries to traumatic catastrophic injuries. Our specialists with years of experience in surgery and internal medicine have at their disposal, state of the art equipment to help diagnose your horse's condition. Our experienced field service veterinarians also have the ability to bring many of these advanced diagnostics right to your horse. Horses are also evaluated for lameness, and undergo advanced imaging such as nuclear scintigraphy, MRI, and CT. We also offer your horse regenerative procedures such as stem cell therapy, platelet rich plasma therapy and Prostride.

Our carefully selected veterinary team works tirelessly at our hospital and in the field to provide exceptional care to your horse, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are also the only 24-hour equine emergency facility that provides 24-hour intensive care to hospitalized patients in our region.

In Memory of Dr. Peter Bousum
Co-Founder of The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center

Dr. Bousum was a 1969 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer and a visionary, who had foresight 30 years ago to see the need for an equine hospital in scenic Hunterdon County in New Jersey, a project that he decided to embark upon after years of traveling with the United States and Canadian Equestrian Teams.

Over the years Dr. Bousum proudly oversaw the expansive growth and development of the practice, as well as the growth and professional development of many of the young veterinarians that worked here over the course of the past 30 years.

Dr. Bousum was also an avid fly-fisherman and an advocate of the Upper Delaware River System. He served on the board of Directors of the Friends of the Upper Delaware, a non-profit group whose mission is to protect, preserve and enhance the cold-water ecosystem of the Upper Delaware River Watershed. He also served as the northeast regional board member in the American Association of Equine Practitioners.

The practice and veterinary profession lost an icon with his passing. Those of us in the veterinary and equine community will forever be indebted to him for his contributions to equine veterinary medicine and the business practices of the profession. His presence at the clinic has been greatly missed, and he leaves behind a legacy that all of us at Mid-Atlantic are continuing to build upon. His soul will forever be the foundation of Mid-Atlantic.

Supporting Our Equine Community

The Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center is proud to support many equine events and local charities. In 2017 through our annual fundraiser and golf outing, we raised $12,000 for the Retired Racehorse Project.
